Greensburg Central Catholic Junior-Senior High school is pleased to announce the hiring of John (JT) Thompson as head football coach. Thompson brings more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experiences including tenures at Gannon University, St. Vincent College, Mercyhurst University, Sacred Heart University, St. Francis College, and Marist College.
GCC principal J. Kevin Frye explained that “we’ve been proud of the growth of our football program, and we’re excited that more than ten quality candidates were interested in joining our school community.” Parents, student-athletes, and staff formed the committee that unanimously chose Thompson as the top candidate. “We were impressed not only by his considerable football knowledge and experience, but also by his sincere faith and desire to use football as an extension of the school’s ministry,” said Principal Frye.
As head coach, Thompson wants his players to “experience a family atmosphere that in every way supports their academic, athletic, spiritual, and social needs while in school,” and says that his “players will represent the values and virtues of our Catholic faith” that is foundational reason for the existence of Greensburg Central Catholic. Thompson is “excited to build on the great winning tradition that Greensburg Central Catholic has always had while taking the program to new heights by developing each player’s athletic talents and character on and off the field.” A graduate of Marist College (Poughkeepsie, NY), Thompson is employed as a sales representative at Pennsylvania-based packing company and resides in Greensburg with his wife Sarah (Kovach) who is an alumna of GCC and his three children, Ryan (10), Joey (8), and Libby (7), who attend Christ the Divine Teacher School in Latrobe.
