Visual Arts | The Art Department
The Art Department, instructed by Mrs. Cheri Acita and Mrs. Laura Starzynski, offers a variety of courses and a student club.
Classes include Freshman Studio Art, sophomores, juniors, and seniors may take Creative Design, and Sculpture and Drawing & Painting are courses offered to eleventh and twelfth grade students.
Mrs. Acita’s Advanced Art and Photography courses are offered to seniors only. Mrs. Starzynski has introduced a new course, the art of film. This class will be open to juniors and seniors and will meet daily, to view classic and critically acclaimed movies. Students will then write short evaluations and discuss their observations with the class.
The Art Club participates in a variety of service activities and members generously give of their time and talents before and after school. Our group also meets once or twice a month during the allotted school time for clubs. Most recently, Art Club members painted several styles of glassware with floral and spring designs to benefit the annual GCC Auction. Last semester all sculpture students created beautiful ceramic bowls for the “Empty Bowls” project benefiting the Westmoreland County Food Bank.
This April we will take our annual trip to Cleveland, stopping first at Kent State University to tour the art department and galleries there. Club members will next visit the local eclectic shops and art exhibits on Coventry St. This is a favorite trip among students and instructors.
